Day 8 - Yanakie to Melbourne

Woke early today to take a few pics of the sunrise over the bay from our campsite but when after taking a couple of snaps, the camera battery went flat so I cannot share too many pics with you unfortunately.
We got our things packed after that and decided to drive on all the way through to Melbourne, only stopping for a quick coffee in Fish Creek.
After a few hours drive we eventually arrived in Melbourne. Kate had already found and booked a hotel for us on the internet during the ride in, so we were all set for a camping-free night on the town. We headed first to well-known St Kilda beach for lunch and then quickly checked into our hotel and headed straight for the city.
The best way to describe Melbourne is probably Brighton with a CBD. There were quite a few odd looking characters around which made people watching quite entertaining. It was a little odd being surrounded by so many people in a city after days spent in remote areas.
We spent the afternoon walking around the shops and went up the Melbourne high-rise 360 Observation deck where you, funnily enough, we had a 360 view of the city.
The night was drawing in, so we decided to head on over to the Waterfront City and NewQuay for dinner thinking that great seafood would be easily had there. Melbourne is supposidly renowned for it's great wining and dining but I must admit our experience was not the best we have had in Australia, perhaps we have just been spoilt but it was a little bit of a let down which, I guess, sums up our visit to Melbourne as a whole really. I do appreciate that it was a very brief visit but compared with other cities we have seen here, especially Sydney, there is just no comparison.
Tomorrow we plan to head out early and get out onto the Great Ocean Road, our furtherest point in our adventure.
Laters,
Simon and Kate
PS. We are here
